Our Mission

First Steps Early Pregnancy Triage Clinic provides early access to safe and responsive care for every pregnant person and their chosen family by cultivating a truly collaborative, team-based service that serves as a first point of contact for all pregnant individuals, where timely care is assured and families are connected to the network of services available to support their best health outcomes. 

First Steps team members receive training and ongoing support to facilitate trauma-informed and culturally safe care for all people.

Equitable access for all pregnant people to timely, appropriate and sensitive care. Self referrals are accepted by phone or text message.

No prior antenatal care or investigations required. Virtual and in-person appointments. Pregnancy care, counseling and referral pathways, miscarriage management, and early screening and detection of high risk pregnancies all help improve patient experience and health outcomes.

 Streamline pregnancy referral pathways to support timely and efficient patient onboarding to the Thompson Region Family Obstetrics group, or specialist care as needed, while decreasing patient burden on services such as the Emergency Department and the Urgent Primary Care & Learning Centre. 

 Mobilize existing capacity among healthcare providers who have expertise but may not be utilizing their skills for various reasons by offering an innovative model, flexible work environment, well-defined scope of service without the burden of call, and a truly team based approach where equity, innovation and psychological safety are guiding principles.  Every team member is encouraged to engage in team development and contribute meaningfully to the culture and the evolution of the service.
